MADISONVILLE, Ky. — Trover Health System, located in Madisonville, Kentucky, and Baptist Healthcare System, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, are pleased to announce that they have entered into exclusive negotiations to form a strategic partnership whereby Trover Health System will become a member of the Baptist system.

Wednesday evening, the Trover Board of Directors reviewed Letters of Intent submitted by three finalists — Baptist Healthcare System, LifePoint Hospitals, and Owensboro Medical Health System. Each finalist was selected based on its ability to assist Trover with objectives for the affiliation process that included assistance with the design and implementation of new models of care and payment reform, providing access to capital, experience with recruiting and sustaining physician relations, and developing service line partnerships.

Trover Health System is an integrated healthcare provider serving western Kentucky residents for more than 55 years. With seven locations in six counties, Trover offers 55 services and specialties and employs more than 90 staff physicians and residents.

Baptist Healthcare System owns five acute-care hospitals with more than 1,650 licensed beds in Louisville, Lexington, Paducah, Corbin and La Grange, and manages Hardin Memorial, a 300-bed acute-care hospital in Elizabethtown, and Pattie A. Clay, a 105-bed acute-care hospital in Richmond. To help navigate the rapid changes affecting healthcare organizations nationwide, Baptist Healthcare System brings in-depth experience in hospital/clinic ownership and management, employed and independent physician relationships, home health services, health insurance through its Bluegrass Family Health plans, occupational health services and wellness programs for businesses. Each of these components plays a critical role in the future success of healthcare, and offers a strong foundation for the development and growth of local services.

“I commend the Board of Directors and members of the Strategic Planning Committee for the extremely thoughtful and thorough work they have done in coming to this decision,” said Trover President and CEO E. Berton Whitaker. “All three of the finalists are highly respected healthcare organizations. We are confident that Baptist’s sterling reputation and commitment to quality care will assist us in serving our region of Western Kentucky. By joining the Baptist system, Trover joins the Baptist state-wide network of hospitals and will gain access to a broad range of operational and financial resources, as well as Baptist’s clinical quality initiatives and experienced leadership.”

“Baptist Healthcare System is proud and honored to be selected as the finalist in Trover’s search for a strategic partner,” said Baptist Healthcare System President and CEO Tommy J. Smith. “We look forward to the final stage of this process which will allow us to more thoroughly explore the potential and vast possibilities of partnering with such an outstanding medical institution like Trover Health System. We share the common mission of partnering with our physicians to strive for clinical excellence and putting our patients’ needs first; it is with these two goals in mind that we’ll continue to explore a strategic relationship.”

Trover and Baptist will now begin more in-depth negotiations to reach a final agreement.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — The Trover Health System Board of Directors has invited three organizations to continue participating in discussions related to a potential strategic alliance. The three were selected as part of the Request For Proposal process the health system initiated in April and represent entities who could potentially meet Trover’s goal to ensure the long-term delivery of quality healthcare to the people of Western Kentucky.

The organizations invited to participate in the due diligence process are Baptist Healthcare System, LifePoint Hospitals, and Owensboro Medical Health System.

The need for the exploration of a formal partnership is directly driven by healthcare reform, changes in medicine, and the health needs of Kentucky. By working together, our physicians and other healthcare professionals will be able to provide services more efficiently, care for the growing number of insured patients, and address disease prevention and prominent health issues.

“We don’t yet know what form a proposed partnership may take,” added Whitaker. “Ultimately, this process is designed to position Trover for the future and illustrates not only the progressive thinking of the Trover Board and management, but also its commitment to doing what’s right for the community, our patients, and our employees.”

The primary objective of the RFP process is to affiliate with a partner who seeks to sustain access to quality healthcare in the communities Trover serves by showing a willingness to assist Trover with the following:

McKesson Customers among First to Receive Medicaid EHR Incentive Payments, Trover Health System and Central Baptist modernizing technology to achieve meaningful use

ATLANTA, Aug. 18, 2011 - Two McKesson customers – Trover Health System in Madisonville, Ky., and Central Baptist Hospital of Baptist Healthcare System in Lexington, Ky. – are among the first hospitals in the country to receive funding under the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program. The federal grants, paid through state Medicaid offices, are being issued to providers working toward achieving meaningful use measures established by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Totaling more than $2.5 million combined, the payments to Trover and Central Baptist will assist the providers in implementing electronic health record (EHR) technology to more efficiently manage clinical operations and drive improvements in patient care. Trover is implementing the Horizon Clinicals® certified EHR system. The software received Complete EHR certification in November 2010, meeting the certification criteria for Stage 1 EHR technology. [i]

“This funding will enable us to continue investing in the EHR technology that is essential to delivering high-quality patient care and demonstrating meaningful use,” said E. Berton Whitaker, president and chief executive officer, Trover Health System. “We have a history of success using McKesson’s Managed Services™ to outsource our IT operations and enhance productivity. Now we look forward to modernizing the way we deliver care with Horizon Clinicals so that we can further improve operations and health outcomes.”

Central Baptist was the first of several hospitals under the Baptist Healthcare System to receive EHR incentive funding at the beginning of this year. Like Trover, the hospital is taking advantage of the advanced functionality in McKesson’s certified EHR to prepare for Stage 1 ARRA requirements, further increase collaboration, and enhance clinical performance.

“We’re excited to be one of the first hospitals to receive funding under the ARRA initiative,” said Bill Sisson, president, Central Baptist Hospital. “But more important than the payment is the fact that we’re reinforcing our commitment to innovation, efficiency and excellence in care across our organization.”

With the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of healthcare IT and connectivity solutions, McKesson supports health systems as they focus on maximizing clinical performance and efficiency while providing more coordinated care to their patients.

Horizon Clinicals is designed for health enterprises that want to adapt to evolving care delivery and reimbursement models. It is part of McKesson’s comprehensive portfolio, which brings healthcare stakeholders together, enables organizations to improve the business of care, and empowers caregivers with the information they need to deliver better care.

“At its core, the journey to meaningful use is a clinical excellence initiative,” said Rod O’Reilly, president, Health Systems Enterprise Solutions, McKesson Provider Technologies. “McKesson technology can be a powerful, strategic enabler in that journey, and we look forward to continuing our partnerships with Trover and Central Baptist as they begin this next chapter in their transformation.”

Trover Health System Announces Partnership Exploration

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — To ensure Trover Health System’s abilities to fulfill its mission of Excellent Care, Every Time, the Trover Board of Directors have committed itself to investigating strategic options, including potential strategic alliances with like-minded, community-oriented entities. This exploration is part of Trover’s overall goal to ensure the long-term delivery of quality healthcare to the people of its six-county service area.

The announcement was made today during the Madisonville-Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Hot Topics Luncheon held at the Trover Clinic Tower. According to Trover President and CEO E. In the meantime, Trover’s Board, management, employees, and medical staff will continue to serve its patients each day with the same dedication and quality they have exhibited for the past 55 years.

“Trover, like many health systems across the country, is dealing with a new reality that requires a shift to a new business model,” said Whitaker. “In Kentucky, we are seeing consolidations and alignments of healthcare systems and hospitals in nearly every market. The evolving private insurance market, the financial crisis, and healthcare reform are requiring health systems to make transformational change. Trover Center for Women’s Health Receives William J. Gies Award for Outstanding Innovation

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — The Center for Women’s Health at Trover Health System has been selected as the 2011 winner for the William J. Gies Award for Outstanding Innovation. The Gies awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., honor individuals and organizations exemplifying dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation, and achievement in dental education, research, and leadership.

The Center for Women’s Health was selected because of its achievement in advancing oral health in prenatal patients. The center was nominated by Robert Kovarik, DMD, MD, from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. Dr. Kovarik and the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry have worked with the women’s center to improve oral health, access to care, and oral health literacy through a prenatal care delivery model called CenteringPregnancy Smiles. As a direct result of this program, preterm and low birth-weight births were significantly reduced, improving the infants’ health and saving an estimated $2 million in direct health costs.

“Preterm births are occurring at an startling rate in our area,” said Trover President and CEO E. Berton Whitaker. “As a result of the Centering Pregnancy program, the only one in western Kentucky, babies born to Centering mothers are more likely to have a healthier birth weight, and are less likely to be born too early. The CenteringPregnancy Smiles initiative brought about remarkable improvements in birth outcomes and provided mothers with lifelong education. We are proud to receive this esteemed award.”

The ADEAGies Foundation will honor the Center for Women’s Health for its innovation in supports of dental education at the Gies Awards celebration on March 14, 2011, in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. The awards celebration benefits the ADEAGies Foundation, a charitable nonprofit.

Trover Health System to Host Educational Symposium

Symposium to Focus on Neurodegenerative and Neurological Diseases in Rural Areas

MADISONVILLE, Ky. - As part of Trover Health System's regional leadership in continuing education, Trover will host the 2010 Trover Symposium on October 22 at the Madisonville Trover Clinic. The focus for this year's event is "Providing Evidence Based Medicine for Neurodegenerative and Neurological Diseases in Rural Areas" and has attracted healthcare professionals from across the state.

"Education has always played a vital role in the history and growth of Trover Health System," said Trover President and CEO E. Berton Whitaker. "Trover is more than just a place of healing, we're also a place for learning and we are committed to delivering education in serving the unique medical needs of rural Kentucky."

The Trover Symposium is designed to benefit school counselors, physicians, speech pathologists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, psychologists and other interested healthcare professionals. Mental health and mental disorders are serious problems, and often times in rural areas, these problems are increased by the failure to identify them early on. This session offers primary care practitioners education in mental health diagnosis that will help them in identifying problems in their patients.

Access to mental health care and concerns for suicide, stress, depression, and anxiety disorders were identified as major rural health concerns among state offices of rural health, according to the authors of "Mental Health and Mental Disorders - A Rural Challenge." A recent survey of state and local rural health leaders also found that mental health and mental disorders are the fourth most often identified rural health priority.

Speakers for this year's symposium include Gregory A. Jicha, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Neurology at Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Center; Paul Glaser, MD, Ph.D., Vice Chair for Research, Department of Psychiatry, Researcher in Psychiatry and Anatomy Departments at the University of Kentucky; Stanislav S. Zakharenko, MD, Ph.D. at the Department of Developmental Neurobiology, at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital; and Jesse H. Wright, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs, and Director of the Depression Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
